Federal programs and services proven to foster economic progress and protect low- and moderate-income families face deep cuts in the name of deficit reduction. These include education and housing programs. The threats are real, but CHN says “we can successfully oppose these cuts if we all work together to demonstrate the value of and need for these services.” Sign on to this statement to protect and enhance supports that work.
More details: Elected officials on both sides of the aisle have proposed deep cuts to education, housing, and other vital domestic programs all in the name of deficit reduction. The new House leadership is expected to cut domestic programs by about 20 percent in 2011. There are also bipartisan Senate efforts to slash spending. And we know the Administration will also propose cuts in some programs, including a proposal to cut the Community Service Block Grant in half in fiscal year 2012.
The solution: The threats are real, but we can successfully oppose these cuts if we all work together to demonstrate the value of and need for these services. Our ability to win or lose hinges on our capacity to come together as service providers, advocacy groups, faith and business leaders, labor and civil rights groups to fight these short-sighted budget cuts that slam the breaks on economic progress for all of us.
The Coalition on Human Needs has launched the Strengthening America’s Values and Economy For All Campaign - an initiative to SAVE low- and moderate-income people from loss of economic security due to threatened severe cuts in federal funding, and to SAVE the federal capacity to spur economic recovery and progress for the benefit of all.
