A Soldier Speaks on Sirius Radio
Part of the amazing response to Celina's original interview with Zechariah included a call to appear on Mike Feder's show on Sirius's channel 148, Sirius Talk Central.
The two talk with Mike Feder about the articles, about Zech's experiences in Iraq and returning from the war, and they take calls from the show's listeners.
This is a partial, edited transcript.
Mike Feder: The interview was so stark and graphic that I'd like to have you repeat it here so people can hear it. [...]
Celina de Leon: Zech, do you mind giving us a summary of the experiences you shared in our print interview for people who haven't read the interview?
Zech: Sure, I don't know where to begin, I guess start at the beginning. When we first entered Iraq, we had spent a lot of time out in the farm fields in Northern Iraq. We were working with the peshmerga, a Kurdish faction, a paramilitary that fights for the Kurds. We slowly moved south, into the city of Kirkuk, where we initially secured the oil fields, we set up a security perimeter around them to make sure that they couldn't be destroyed or torn down.
MF: That's a priority, then?
Zech: Oh that was the initial priority, when we first got there, within maybe a half hour or hour of moving into the city we'd moved straight to the oil fields, searched the buildings and cleared everything and set up a defensive position around the oil refineries, or the wells themselves.
