The Tamaa (taken from the Swahili root word for hope) program was developed by the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CcTC) in West Philadelphia to treat war-traumatized children, enabling them to better cope with their experiences and acculturate to their new environment. The program also offers support for school personnel to help them encourage West African students, their families and caretakers in school success.   Two new resources have been released to help West African children acclimate into the climate of Western educaiton.

School Training: A Strategy for Changing School Climate for Refugee Children (PDF) is a guidebook for a trauma treatment program for West African children in American schools.  And in the link below, you'll find a traning manual for the assistance program, which includes history of war in the area, a list of traumatic experiences the children may have encountered, and a list of steps to help identify what refugee children may need to acclimate into the Western education climate.
