A new report from the Urban Institute offers five key points about the state Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). States have taken advantage of SCHIP's flexibility to give kids health care coverage-the program has led to lower uninsured rates for poor and low-income children. Combined with Medicaid, SCHIP could cover most uninsured children but further improvements are needed to increase efforts to enroll more children and extend eligibility to currently ineligible immigrant children. And SCHIP funds, until now plentiful, may run short in the face of changing state and federal budgetary priorities.
