After a setback in the Senate, there’s good news for the Low-Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps low-income households meet their energy bills. It’s receiving more attention in the wake of Katrina and as energy costs rise by 35-50 percent in regions across the country. Congress’ hurricane recovery package is likely to include more funding for this program – bringing it almost to the $5.1 billion funding level authorized for LIHEAP.
