According to Educational Testing Service, students whose science or math teachers conducted hands-on learning activities or emphasized higher-order thinking skills—like developing strategies to solve different types of math problems—outperformed their peers by up to 70 percent of a grade level in math, and 40 percent of a grade level in science.
